Mohammed bin Rashid launched the Museum of the Future exhibition on 7 February 2016 as part of the 2016 World Government Summit. The Museum of the Future joined the Dubai Future Foundation under the new framework.

The Museum of the Future temporarily opened at Madinat Jumeirah on February 10, 2017, and February 9, 2018, both times the World Government Summit was taking place there. Eventually, The Museum of the Future was formally inaugurated on February 22, 2022, at 7 p.m. Dubai Time. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, along with Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, were granted permission to hold the opening ceremony and the opening of the Museum.

The Museum of the Future, one of the most intricate buildings in the world, was created by the architecture firm Killa Design and built by Buro Happold. In terms of its green certification, the structure strives for a LEED Platinum rating.
